Microsoft’s exam 70-229, Designing and Implementing Databases with Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition is a core requirement for the MCDBA (Microsoft Certified Database Administrator) on SQL Server 2000 certification. It is designed for candidates who work in a medium to enterprise computing environment that uses SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition.

There is no specific prerequisite for this exam but Microsoft does make the following recommendations: Candidates should have at least one year of experience implementing relational databases in environments with these characteristics: heterogeneous databases; SQL Server security integrated with Windows Authentication; client/server configurations of 50 to 5,000 or more users; web configurations that use IIS or COM+; databases as large as 2 TB; and multiple installations of SQL Server 2000.

Exam 70-229 is also an elective for these other certifications: MCSE (Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer) on Windows 2000; MCSE (Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer) on Windows NT 4.0; MCSD (Microsoft Certified Solution Developer) for Microsoft .NET; MCSD (Microsoft Certified Solution Developer); and MCAD (Microsoft Certified Application Developer) for Microsoft .NET.

The domains covered by this exam include:
  • Developing a Logical Data Model
  • Implementing the Physical Database
  • Retrieving and Modifying Data
  • Programming Business Logic
  • Tuning and Optimizing Data Access
  • Designing a Database Security Plan

I had to take this exam 3 times. They trick you on the questions that have code in the answers. The answers have little differences like commas, ands, as well as other subtle changes. Take your time to read every answer before you choose.

This is no cake walk despite what some may say. If you have a solid foundation and experience in logical db design and usage you will still find this exam quite challenging.

Spent quite a few months preparing for this one from the Sybex book. Tossed the Microsoft book away because it was so horrible to read. I found the exam easier than the three I took for my MCAD .NET but spent more time preparing. It certainly was not as hard as I expected.

I did the 5 day offical Microsoft training course and it didn't cover half of what was on the exam. It's the last course I'll be going on for a while as I go back to self study. The books appear to cover all the examined topics, but the courses don't match up when it comes to Microsoft. This was the one I needed for MCDBA, so MCAD.NET or MCSE Messaging 2k3 next for me. Not sure which yet.

A lot harder than all the practise tests I tried. Had some 'beta' questions which were not part of the usual curriculum and were only there because Microsoft are deciding whether they should expand the 70-229 curriculum.

Untitled Document > Persistent Group Chat: An Approach for More Profitable Team Communications : Unlike email, instant messages (IMs) do not allow group communication; nor do they persist -- you can't hold on to them for as long as you wish. Persistent group chat, however, allows businesses to organize persistent dialogue around business-critical topics, and keep them for easy retrieval later.
